Teaching Transmedia Practice
I’m back in the trenches this semester teaching transmedia practice to eager and talented third year students at Melbourne’s RMIT for Production Project 1. Each class is split into production groups of 6-7 students who are then asked to select a short story from the public domain upon which to base their transmedia story adaptation.
Whilst the projects are still in draft mode, I’m impressed with the work produced by the students so far. Current project concepts include: a murder mystery “whodunnit” based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves; a drug addiction campaign using Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as a metaphor for addiction; another murder mystery, this time based on the story of Hansel and Gretel (fairytales make for great transmedia fodder!); an online dystopian sci-fi experience based on Kurt Vonnegut’s 2BRO2B; and a fun spin on the myth of the Loch Ness Monster involving crazed fanatics and a disc jockeying ‘Nessy!
For an example of what they’ve been up to check out this story hook created by one the groups:
Production Crew: Tiffany Tan, Tiffany Wong, Even Raif, Maria Borboa, Simon Gilberg & Jonathan Leschinski
Actor: Connor Woods
Voice Actor: Tiffany Wong
Check out the project drafts for yourself, here and stay tuned for the final iterations, which are due in two weeks.
